Point Reyes National Seashore (Seashore), a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking a Vegetation Biological Science Technician (BST, Plants; GS-0404-06/07) to work with vegetation management-related projects involving both invasive plant monitoring and removal, as well as revegetation. The position is a Temporary position under the NPS for one year, extendable to 2 years.
The BST will assist with a wide variety of tasks, including invasive plant removal; mapping of invasive and rare plants; monitoring of restoration projects and rare plant populations; research projects related to restoration; and oversight of volunteer crews. The Technician will remove invasive plants using manual, mechanical, and chemical means. The Technician will assist with revegetation efforts, including maintenance of installed plants. The Technician will collect data and navigate to locations using GPS (e.g., mobile device using ArcGIS Field Map) and use ArcGIS to manage spatial data and produce graphics and maps of collected and other data. In addition, the Technician will enter and validate data; conduct data analysis; and produce written reports and memorandums as needed.
The applicant should have demonstrated experience and skills in manual removal and chemical and mechanical treatment of invasive plant species. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) is highly desirable. Applicants should be physically fit and able to hike off-trail over rough terrain, carrying a 30-lb pack, and they should be able to conduct field work in all types of weather, on steep slopes, and with potential exposure to poison oak, stinging nettle, ticks, and mosquitoes. Most work will be Monday through Friday, 8 hrs/day, but the candidate may be asked to work some longer, weekend, or evening hours, with compensation. Salary is $24.91/hr to $27.68/hr. Annual and sick leave are provided, as well as health benefits. A personal vehicle may be necessary to commute to and from work.
