The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is currently hiring seasonal forestry technicians to perform timber marking and cruising duties across two five-thousand acre restoration projects in the upper Feather River watershed. These projects are pilot initiatives of the South Lassen Watersheds Group, a one-million acre watershed collaborative coordinating land management in the northern Feather River basin and adjacent tributaries.
These positions are being hired through Sierra Institute to conduct work on the Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest and the crew will be coordinated jointly by SI and LNF staff. Crew members will receive ample training opportunities including: Region 5 Timber Cruising certification and Wilderness First Aid, as well as (depending on instructor availability) Basic 32 Wildland Firefighting training and S212 Wilderness Chainsaw certification.
We are hiring a Crew Leader (1), Crew Members (3), and Crew Apprentices (2). The Apprentice positions are geared towards those entering the forestry workforce and are a perfect fit for someone wanting to change directions in conservation or for a budding students.
Compensation is as follows: CL- $19.50/ hr; CM- $18.50/hr; CA- $16.00/hr
General duties include unit boundary marking in green and fire-affected timber sales, timber marking and cruising, hand thinning unit marking, and burn severity assessment/ data collection.
Additional skills that will be developed in the course of employment will include tree marking, recognition of other natural resources such as wildlife and hydrology, forest demography and pathology, fire and fuels distributions, tree species ID, and data collection using GPS and GPS enabled maps and tablets.
