Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) is seeking a Vegetation Biological Science Technician for its joint programs with Point Reyes National Seashore (Seashore) on Vegetation Management and Monitoring. The position is a temporary position (May 2022 – January 2023, with potential to extend dependent on funding availability and start date). PRNSA is the primary non-profit partner of the National Park Service at Point Reyes and collaborates with the Seashore on vegetation management and restoration. The Vegetation Biological Science Technician will be an employee of PRNSA, which will act as the direct supervisor, while Seashore staff will provide day-to-day technical guidance in the field.
The Biological Science Technician will assist with a wide variety of tasks, including invasive plant removal; mapping of invasive and rare plants; monitoring of dune and other restoration projects and rare plant populations; and field oversight of volunteer and paid contractor crews. The Technician will remove invasive plants using manual, mechanical, and chemical means. The Technician will collect data and navigate to locations using GPS (either Trimble unit or mobile device using ArcGIS Field Map) and use ArcGIS to produce graphics and maps of collected and other data. In addition, the Technician will enter and validate data in Excel or Access databases and produce written reports and memorandums as needed. The Technician may also assist with park compliance efforts by conducting pre- and post-project surveys/monitoring for rare plants and wetland vegetation.
The applicant should have demonstrated experience and skills in manual removal and chemical and mechanical treatment of invasive plant species. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) is highly desirable. The applicant should also have experience and skills in implementing rare plant and vegetation monitoring and survey programs, as well as with oversight of contractor crews and volunteer groups. The applicant must have a strong, working knowledge of California flora and skills in identifying species with only minimal use of a taxonomic key. The applicant must have demonstrated experience and skills with use of ArcGIS, as well as the use of GPS/tablets for mapping and site navigation. The applicant must have demonstrated experience and skills in use of Excel, word processing programs, as well as in writing memorandums and reports. Applicants should be reliable and punctual and have demonstrated organizational skills; great attention to detail; and the ability to consistently meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision when necessary. Applicants should be physically fit and able to conduct heavy manual labor and long days of chemical treatment, as well as hike off-trail over rough terrain, carrying a 50-lb pack. ‘
Most work will be Monday through Friday, 8 hrs/day, but the candidate may be asked to work some longer, weekend, or evening hours, with compensation. Salary range is $21.61 to $24.51 per hour, non-exempt, with exact salary rate dependent on strength of qualifications and experience.
