    Biological Science Technician Botany & Range Technician (GS7) Tahoe National Forest

    The Tahoe National Forest will hire a botany crew and range technician for the summer 2022 field season. Temporary Biological Science Technicians are needed for ~six months. Pay for GS7 level is ~$20.72/hr. Start date ~March 2022.

    Job Descriptions and Qualifications:

    BOTANY CREW: Primary duties are to conduct floristic targeted surveys, support project implementation and treat invasive plants on the American River and Yuba River Ranger Districts. Provides technical direction to crews which may be under contract or lower level seasonal employees. Acts as project lead to coordinate survey planning, training, data management, and schedules to ensure completion throughout season. Additional work includes restoration, rare plant monitoring, data entry & range monitoring. Barracks housing may be available. Up to 2 GS-7 level positions are available.

    Desired skills include: experience with plant identification using taxonomic keys, familiarity with California flora (including fungi and non-vascular plants), and proficiency using GIS, AGOL, topographic maps, and compass. Ability to operate vehicles on rough and 4WD roads is necessary for the position. Qualified candidates must be in good physical fitness and be willing to work outdoors under strenuous conditions throughout the summer.

    RANGE TECHNICIAN: Primary duties are to participates in range utilization monitoring and ensuring standards and permit compliance are met within allotment. Provides technical direction to crews, which may be under contract or seasonal employees, in various projects for botany. Assists in the integration and coordination of other forest service resource requirements and needs related to range.

    Desired skills include: ability to install and read transects and other instruments for gathering data in range management, knowledge of mapping and aerial photo interpretation to map out and delineate data to inform range management, skill in the operation of hand and hand-held power tools and equipment in order to perform and/or lead others in the construction and maintenance of range improvements, and ability to work independently.
