    Landscape Assistant at the California Academy of Sciences

    This position is responsible for implementing building landscape and grounds activities for the California Academy of Sciences. In addition to maintenance activities of the surrounding Academy gardens and plaza spaces, this position works closely with IBSS and Exhibits group to maintain landscaping at the Academy’s living roof and terraces. This position reports to the Landscape Supervisor.

    • Learn and run onsite: Academy irrigation software and operate software daily and or weekly when necessary
    • Order and maintain plants, irrigation, mulch, compost, soil, and hardscape materials needed to ensure the Academy landscape is healthy at all times.
    • Assist with managing volunteer days 1 to 2 days per week
    • Driving Academy vehicles for material acquisition
    • Comfortable working on Living Roof and Grounds both alone and with groups
    • Maintain up-to-date education with horticulture, through publications, classes, conferences, mentorship and/or college
    • Assist with contractor quotes and supervision to maintain landscape such as arborists, gardeners, horticulturists, exhibit contractors, Irrigation technologies, educational speakers for volunteers and botanists.
    • Perform daily tasks for manual landscaping
    • Ensure all gardening/landscaping equipment is maintained and in working order
    • Work with the Building Systems, Building Maintenance, and Engineering departments to maintain the irrigation and drainage systems in the grounds and on the roof and protect the building envelope
    • Use IPM, Veganic gardening methods and Permaculture Practices
    • Follow all Academy safety regulations
    • Other duties as assigned
    The requirements listed below are representative of the experience, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred.

    • Minimum of 1-year horticulture experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Knowledge of and skilled in cultivating California native plant species, planting processes, and environmental constraints
    • Knowledge of commercial irrigation systems and ability to work on irrigation plumbing and controllers
    • Ability to work as part of a team or collaborate well with colleagues
    • Must have a valid California driver’s license
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
    • Ability to operate heavy equipment including skid loaders, forklifts, and aerial work platforms
    • Ability to change tasks to avoid injury from repetitive motions
    • The ability to stand for most of the working day, bend, kneel, dig, and transport 50 lbs
    The physical expectations described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the duties of this position. Ability to safely lead volunteers or groups of all ages and group sizes on outdoor tour routes that may include uneven paths and moderate terrain. When working on domes of Living Roof, must follow OSHA standards to maintain a secure point of contact at all times. This position will work outdoors while being exposed to various types of weather conditions including sun, rain, wind, heat, and cold. Additionally, this position handles and has exposure to a variety of plants, insects, landscaping materials, and chemicals.
